Obituary

Phyllis (Josie) Kurpakus Boney, age 91, of West Deer, passed away March 13, 2024, peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 18, 1932, in Natrona, to the late Wesley and Eleanor Vorp Thompson.

Josie graduated from Ken High in 1950. She worked at Eat'n Park in New Kensington as a waitress, waitress supervisor, and finished her time there as a baker.

Josie was fond of holiday celebrations with her family, whom she loved dearly. She loved baking cookies for Christmas and family weddings, and everyone enjoyed her cookies.

An avid reader, Josie enjoyed doing crossword and word search books. Josie loved the Pittsburgh Pirates from an early age, often telling stories of her and a friend paying a quarter to ride the bus to Pittsburgh for the games. She continued to watch the games throughout her life. Josie also enjoyed RVing with her second husband and friends.

Josie's family has many wonderful memories of spending time together at the family camp in Cooperstown, PA. She took great pride in her gardens and enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables at camp.

We will all miss her funny, amazing sense of humor.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husbands, Philip Kurpakus Sr. and Clifford Boney; son, Philip Kurpakus Jr.; son-in-law, Rick Spice; and seven siblings.

Josie is survived by her children, Patricia (Bob) Kirkwood of Lower Burrell, Constance (John) Erbe, of Phoenixville, Debby Spice, of New Kensington, Pamela (Richard) Armbrust of Apollo, Paul (Bonnie) Kurpakus, of Shaler, Alan Kurpakus of Cooperstown, and Joy Pacella of West Deer, with whom she resided; daughter-in-law, Amy Kurpakus; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private services were held at Joseph J. Cardaro Funeral Home, New Kensington, and private burial was in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell. www.cardarofuneralhome.com
