Dr. Russell Newton 'Russ' Reed, 81, of Lower Burrell, passed away Monday, Aug. 21, 2017, in his home. He was born Feb. 22, 1936, in New Kensington, to the late Ray M. and Edna C. (Shuey) Reed. He was a 1955 graduate of New Kensington High School. In 1966, he received a bachelor's degree from Sterling College, in Sterling, Kan., and in 1971, he received a Master's degree from the University of Missouri. In 1985, he earned his Ph.D. in Education. Dr. Reed was an elementary school teacher and principal in Grandview, Mo., before returning home to accept a position as an educator with Westmoreland County Community College, New Kensington. This post spanned a 20-year period. Russ was a food bank volunteer, and an exceptional baker and quilter. He will be missed by his many valued friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jean L. Carrai; and brothers, Ronald R. Reed and Richard D. Reed. He is survived by nephews, Mark Carrai, Keith Reed and Richard Reed; and nieces, Marcy Carrai, Marlene Petro, Kimberly Dengler, Lisa Arnold and Renae Ruppersberger; and sisters-in-law, Joyce Reed and Jane Reed.
