Obituary

Doreen Joan Galie, 79, of Lower Burrell, passed away peacefully Monday, June 23, 2025, in her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born September 24, 1945, in New Kensington, to the late Albert C. and Genevieve Swierczewski Galie. Doreen was a 1963 graduate of St. Joseph High School in Natrona and received her Bachelor of Arts in 1987 from Allentown College of Saint Francis de Sales, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She later moved to Bethlehem, PA where she taught English and Theology at Notre Dame High School in Easton. Doreen also worked for a time in the bakery at her local Wegmans. She had a lifelong love for animals and was especially devoted to her cats. Doreen also had a fondness for reading, evident in the books that filled every room in her home. A devoted member of the Roman Catholic Church, she remained active in her faith throughout her life. Upon returning to western PA, Doreen served as a reader at Mount St. Peter Catholic Church in New Kensington and organized a bible study with her dear friends and neighbors. In her final days, when the hospice chaplain asked her, "What shall we pray for?" she simply replied, "Acceptance." Doreen's response was a testament to her faith, and her readiness to meet her Creator face-to-face. She will be fondly remembered for her kind smile, generous and gentle spirit, and humble heart. While Doreen will be deeply missed, her memory will be eternal. Her life was a vivid reminder that attitude is everything – and that we can choose to live a life of meaningful acts of love and service, just as Christ modeled for us. The family is deeply grateful for the care Doreen received from the staff at Care At Home and Bridges Hospice, and for the spiritual support offered by Father Elpidio (Bimbot) Alcontin and the Sisters of Mary Immaculate, who visited frequently to pray with her and bring her Holy Communion. Doreen was also fortunate to live in a closely-knit neighborhood where caring neighbors and friends looked after her in her time of need. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Christopher Galie. Doreen is survived by her brother, Mark (Katina) Galie; 2 nieces, Dena (Dustin) Albert and Krista (Father Gregory) Fedorchak; nephew, Marcus (Julianna) Galie; great nephew, Christopher Fedorchak; and her cats, Bella and Boo. Family and friends will be received from 2:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, June 26, 2025, in the Joseph J. Cardaro Funeral Home, 1125 Kenneth Ave., New Kensington, 724-337-3325. Parting Prayers will be at 9:30 AM on Friday, June 27, 2025, in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at Mount St. Peter Church, New Kensington. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Lower Burrell.
