Betty Jean Tarkington, 90, of Bellevue, formerly of Wilmington, NC, passed away on April 6, 2026, in Pittsburgh—leaving behind a legacy of sharp wit, a mischievous streak, and a laugh no one will ever forget.

Born on August 28, 1935, in Wilmington, NC, to the late Guy Roderick and Margaret Lillian Harvell Chinnis, Betty lived a life rooted in caring for others. She was a graduate of New Hanover High School and later graduated from Cape Fear Community College with a nursing degree, attending classes alongside her daughter, Susie.

Betty spent many years as a caregiver, but to those who knew her, that role extended far beyond any job title. She was a true cook and always one for feeding anyone who walked through her door. No one ever left her house hungry, whether they planned to eat or not.

True to the compassion that defined her life, Betty continued to help others even after her passing. In accordance with her wishes, she donated tissue through CORE, offering healing and hope to burn victims.

She loved to travel and embraced life’s adventures, but she was just as happy at home watching the Kentucky Derby—often placing a bet and cheering like she had a horse in the race. Betty had a sharp wit, a contagious laugh, and—if we’re being honest—a vocabulary that could rival a seasoned sailor.

She loved animals deeply and had a soft spot for even the smallest creatures in need. But while she had a gentle heart, she also had her own unique brand of discipline—family members will fondly remember that you didn’t want to get caught within reach of her “talons” or her trusty fly swatter.

Above all else, Betty’s greatest joy was her family. Whether around the table, on the road, or just sharing stories, those moments meant everything to her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Edwin Tarkington; and her sister, Sharon Rooks.

She is survived by her daughters, Goldie (Terry) Hardison and Susie (Bill) Kiehl; her sister, Linda (Phil) Bauer; her grandchildren, Cory (Rachel), Theresa (Josh), Alyssa, Nathan (Alexis), Crystal, and Christy; her great-grandchildren, Kyle (Karina), Madeline, Charlotte, Delilah, and Emery; as well as Michael, Bob and Jimmy, who she loved like sons; and her nephews, Scott, Justin and Seth.

In keeping with Betty’s wishes, services will be with family and friends from 6 to 8:00 PM on Friday, April 10, 2026, in the Joseph J. Cardaro Funeral Home, 1125 Kenneth Ave., New Kensington, 724-337-3325.
